Our first group outing this semester was to the paper exhibition at the Saatchi gallery. The name says it all, the exhibition explored how different artists use paper as a medium. I found it really interesting engaging in some critical discussion with the new tutors. It was a great initial source of inspiration for the start of the project too as a lot of the work was very playful. Here are some of my favourite pieces...

Dawn Clements produced large scale drawings with ink by taping multiple pieces of paper together. Her work seemed to be a direct realisation of her thoughts as the drawings were continuous, often encompassing whole scenes. Random bits of writing were also included which I interpreted as Clements' internal thoughts.

Gerald Davis' work, especially this 'Fag Boy', reminded me of film stills. Each drawing held a strong narrative and the choice pink as a uniting colour evoked a dream like feel about each image. I could imagine these pieces being part of an animation.

Miler Lagos used piled pieces of newspaper to produce these impressive branch sculptures. This pushes the use of the material and ironically portrays the origin of paper as a material.

Another artist using paper as a sculptural material was Yuken Teruya. Here a tree has been delicately cut out of a McDonalds meal bag. Through this process, Teruya has made something  beautiful and, in the context of the Saatchi Gallery, valuable out of an otherwise throw away item.

Tom Thayer created this beautiful 'Nature Scene' perfectly selecting paper as a medium to reflect the fragility of nature. The movement and weight of the birds standing in front of the scene has been captured so well, it inspired me to start making something!

Christian Holstad uses found imagery and paper to create new narratives. This pencil on newspaper drawing has a great ghostly effect and seems almost photographic.

I was attracted to this series of portraits by Storm Tharp for their varying use of line and colour. I like how some of the information about the face is minimal but the suggestion of the line is enough to create the full picture in your mind.

Daniel Kelly created huge pieces like this one out of collaged pieces of paper. They seemed almost more like set designs rather than drawings. Walking towards and away from the pieces highlighted Kelly's use of perspective within the scenes - it was pretty head ache inducing!

This is the final outcome of my book. The pages flow well as a concertina format and this makes the book become a sort of never ending story.

This is the first page of the book illustrating the 'seed of the world' flying through space and eventually exploding to create the Earth. I want to combine my use of textures from last semester's work along with drawing as I felt that was lacking in my last project. I plan to print the book using 150gsm creamy, off white paper so I have included a coloured background layer to indicate this.

The book will fold to be A5 in size so this is an A4 double spread. There will also be text to explain the story on each page.
